It covers approximately 2 years in Molly’s life: OK, we got the idea. But on the other hand, I couldn’t help but be a little annoyed at how some very tough issues were handled so lightly.

I agree that there are some stereotyping aspects about this book, although I don’t pretend to be knowledgeable about the Seneca culture or other Native American tribes. There were parts of their culture that Molly learned to love, but other parts with which she was unable to reconcile herself.

Children nowadays often lose family and friends through death, divorce, and sudden family moves, and being able to relate to Mollie’s sadness and the firm but kind behavior of her new people could be therapeutic for a child in one of those situations. Still, this doesn’t really take away from the story because the question becomes not “will she stay? I think this book can be used in the classroom if it is done carefully, and in the larger context of cultural respect. Write a customer review. I always feel weird recommending this book, because the title and the fact that it was written by a white person makes it seem as if this book will constantly paint Native Americans in a negative light.
