When everything is repeated, and over, and familiar, it’s the first things rather than the last that count. A whole new volume of Bradbury stories to explore! I’m still in shock. Not the most enthralling collection of Bradbury’s work, but a worthwhile addition to his canon. Toynbee has a bit of sci-fi, horror, fantasy — there are rockets, time travel, monsters, ghosts, serial killers — but there are also non-genre stories with no elements of the supernatural or the fantastical, including one that is just a straight up romance, and some of these rank amongst his best.

Jul 03, Mary rated it liked it. I was surprised to discover it was mostly not science fiction, but rather a mish-mash of straight fiction, SF, horror, supernatural, and even humor. I suggest it to any mature reader, familiar or unfamiliar with Bradbury, looking for a good book! I am amazed at Ray’s ability to write toynnbee genre, but always maintain his voice. This book is still another great collection by the master, despite its undertones.

These stories were mostly written in the ‘s and Bradbury was well into his career at this point This was an entertaining book for me to read, as it contained only one or two stories that I had previously read. Most of the stories feel hollow, and it’s strange, given the richness of most of Bradbury’s work, rest his soul. Stephen King said that Bradbury sometimes over-wrote, but I find that to be a forgivable sin in short collections like this. Though I had been sure to that moment I convecyor predict the end, I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong.

I read the first convecotr short stories, and then halfway through the third one, I thought “OK, maybe I’ll just jump to the fourth” but then I ended up doing that same strategy for the next three subsequent short stories. Some of the stories certainly qualify as SF, a few are marginal, but others aren’t even close to being SF.
