An enjoyable, challenging read. At it’s heart The Corilof affair is an exploration of the morals of revolution and terrorism and of the idea that the ends can ever justify the means. Was his wife in on it? E non resta che fare il conto dei danni.
I had to stop and consider, and let every word sink in. It has been based upon real-life events which have been fictionalised. So on one hand this is a delicate and grim character study, not in the least romantic, though if like me you like these things peppered with descriptions of rain on the streets or the first blooms of Spring or something you get plenty of that kind of thing too, but this is also a philosophical treatise on the hypocrisy, morality, and uselessness of terrorism and revolution, which really takes a lot of smarts to do well.
Like Suite Francaise, Fire in the Blood is a book about people and place. Open Preview See a Problem? But all the same, as long as we are on this earth, we have to play the game.
The characters are so very human; each was a good, kind character, full of flaws that brought happiness, pain, hurt. The setting and the characters are really brought to life. This is definitely a “Must Read” if you liked Suite Francaise. I didn’t feel much of a connection with the characters either.
