When Tom Service reviewed the chamber version of the opera for the Guardian, he felt that the virtues of Weir’s compact musical style and her ability to tell a story with the smallest of musical gestures are even more evident in the later version than in the original.
Eckbert felt himself exceedingly surprised; he met the knight’s friendship with the greater readiness, the less he had anticipated it.

Bertha travels through villages and cliffs until she comes to a forest where she is taken in by an old woman who lives with a dog and a singing bird which lays eggs containing gemstones and pearls. As I was saying goodbye to her I felt somewhat uneasy, for I sensed that I would never see her again. My young soul was now vouchsafed its first intimation of the wider world and the things that went on in it.
