I am spending my time in medieval England with the Roselynde Chronicles – a good summer reading project. However, Alinor is more the story of the English courts and politics during the rule of King John, Lackland.
Okay it was not really striptease but they stripped down! I should reread it now.
So some scenes might be shocking or even distasteful to modern sensibilities, but to me they are far more convincing and thus interesting than those in many wallpaper medievals. Gellis’s works are more accurately called ‘historical fiction’ than ‘historical romance.

Book 2 covers Alinor’s second marriage to Ian at the time of King John. Mar 22, SirenBookReviews rated it really liked it. She seems based to some degree on the historical Eleanor of Aquitaine who makes an appearance in Roselynde – fierce, possessive, deeply loyal to those she loves and far more independent than the men around her are comfortable with.
Alinor, hellis the other hand, never spared Ian a glance while Simon was alive, but now she is shocked at how much she is attracted to him. This biography of a living person relies too much on references to primary sources. Gellis and Mercedes Lackey wrote four prequels in the Baen Books series “Serrated Edge”, whose first four novels Lackey co-wrote with others from to Here, in Alinor, he is portrayed as a king who was left a bankrupt kingdom and while still rather lecherous, was certainly not the worst that England had to offer at the time. Roberta Gellis has been one of the most successful writers of historical fiction of the last few decades, having published about 25 meticulously researched historical novels since Susan Schumacher rated it it was amazing Aug 08, This book portrays him as a decent King, but a lousy person and I tend to feel that history supports this portrayal.
