Subtlety is the method, and the result is fantastic work that should mark the beginning of a brilliant career for James Church.
Once, she was the Justice of Toren – a colossal starship with an artificial intelligence linking thousands of soldiers in the service of the Radch, the empire that conquered the galaxy. That seems damn near unforgivable in a novel which uses its setting as its primary selling point. I expect that not everyone was able to own and use US dollars the way they can now. O’s maneuvering through this murk and carnage — as well as the occasional knock-out blow is quite engaging, but there’s a bit too much reliance on greater powers that be and ultimately not quite enough excitement.

The details of everyday life in North Korea ring true, and Koruo is a fascinating character. Maybe the whole mystery story setup is a bit too subtle to me?
